Dans un essai de traction classique, un \u00e9chantillon est soumis \u00e0 une contrainte croissante jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce que le point de rupture soit atteint, r\u00e9v\u00e9lant ainsi la charge de rupture du mat\u00e9riau. L&rsquo;essai enregistre \u00e0 la fois la force appliqu\u00e9e et l&rsquo;allongement de l&rsquo;\u00e9chantillon pendant toute la dur\u00e9e de l&rsquo;essai.
